The Common Campfire

How it works

Our experience of the city at night is defined by light. Light tells us where to walk, where to wait, where's good, where's safe.

Light from the Common Campfire is defined by people. As they approach, it grows larger and brighter, inviting them to remain and encouraging small moments of unplanned community.

As they depart, the campfire returns to embers.

The Common Campfire consists of 343 individual Neopixel LEDS. These LEDs play fire-like animations in response to the presence of people, sensed by a 360 degree array of thermographic cameras, calibrated to respond to body heat.
